At present, a totally new approach has been acquired and the focus is driven to discover more and more methods of life assessment, diagnosis,  condition evaluation, and ways to prolong the life of assets like Power Transformer, Circuit Breakers, Cts, Cables, Generator and Motors, etc.  Our maintenance crew performs both RLA (Residual Life Assessment) and RLE (Residual Life Extension) studies for entire sub-stations and MV Switchgears.

First and Foremost, transformers such as Generator Transformers, Station Transformers, and Inter-connecting Transformers are much-needed to be highly stable, in order to diminish hazardous risks.  To ascertain the transformer’s serviceability, it is essential to examine the scope of aging and prior determination of arising faults. Hence, we provide an extensive range of tests, termed as Residual Life Assessment that promotes the assessment of the remaining life of a transformer. 

The RLA test strategy operates on a range of tests incorporating electrical tests, oil-paper-related tests to measure the insulation degradation along the Partial Discharge test on the Transformer.  Such tests unveil enough information related to insulation degradation and the remaining life of the equipment. 

Keeping in mind operational safety and reliability, we have crafted this strategy, allowing the asset owners to conduct well-timed decisions to boost and clear out the problems by performing needful repairs, overhauls, or replacement.  More particularly, it is best suited for huge power and generator transformers. Nevertheless, these tests can also be implemented to any critical transformer for assessment of its remaining functionality and life span.

The record of the conditions under which the equipment has worked over the past period is extremely important for RLE studies. This forms the basis and this information coupled with other maintenance records will be very helpful. The general steps followed for carrying out RLE studies are –

For performing RLE studies, the history of the conditions under which the equipment has worked over the past duration is highly considerable. This works as a cornerstone, and concatenating this data with the maintenance history will be beneficial. The overall steps pursued to implement RLE studies are as follows:-

  • Study of past performance data and review of O&M records e.g. loading conditions, number of tripping failures, repairs/replacements, etc.
  • Assessment of the present condition of the equipment, E.g. efficiency, and other operating parameters. 
  • Assessment of remaining life of various equipment parts by conducting Residual Life Estimation (RLE) studies. 
  • Identification of components requiring replacements, repairs, up-gradations/retrofitting.
  • Formulation of R&M/Life Extension scheme covering complete scope of works.
